(Southern East Cree has seven vowels.) The remainder of this page is an overview of East Cree consonants, vowels, and syllables, leading to other pages with more detailed descriptions.<\/p>\r\n<p>Letters between slash brackets often stand for more than one sound. For example, <span class=\"ipa\">\/ p \/<\/span> stands for three sounds, <span class=\"ipa\">[ p ]<\/span>, <span class=\"ipa\">[ b ]<\/span>, and <span class=\"ipa\">[ p\u02b0 ]<\/span>. For an introduction and further links, see the page on <a href=\"..\/orthography\/roman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how to write Cree<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>One sound that is often heard at the end of word ending in a vowel is the <a href=\"..\/orthography\/roman\/glottal-stops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">glottal stop<\/a>. Long vowels sometimes take twice as long to pronounce as short vowels. However, there are lots of exceptions: &#8216;long&#8217; vowels do not always sound long, and &#8216;short&#8217; vowels do not always sound short. See these pages for details:<\/p>\r\n<ul><li>short vowels can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/cree\/en\/grammar\/sounds-east-cree\/sounds\/vowels\/silent-vowels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">silent<\/a>; long vowels cannot be silent<\/li>\r\n<li>long vowels tend to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/cree\/en\/grammar\/sounds-east-cree\/sounds\/vowels\/tense-vowels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tense<\/a><\/li>\r\n<li>short vowels tend to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/cree\/en\/grammar\/sounds-east-cree\/sounds\/vowels\/lax-vowels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lax<\/a><\/li>\r\n<\/ul><p>East Cree also has <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diphthongs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diphthongs<\/a>, which are combinations of vowels and the sounds <span class=\"ipa\">[ w ]<\/span> or <span class=\"ipa\">[ j ]<\/span>. See the page on <a href=\"vowels\/diphthongs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diphthongs<\/a> for details.<\/p>\r\n<h3 class=\"head\"><a name=\"syllables\"><\/a>East Cree syllables<\/h3>\r\n<p>When we speak, we automatically group consonants and vowels into syllables. Syllables, in turn, are the building blocks of words: in one sense words are just a string of syllables; (of course, words also convey meaning whereas syllables do not). It is important to know about syllables in East Cree because rules of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/cree\/en\/grammar\/sounds-east-cree\/sounds\/accent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accent placement<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/cree\/en\/grammar\/sounds-east-cree\/sounds\/vowels\/silent-vowels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">silent vowels<\/a> refer to syllables. Syllables are also central to the syllabary.<\/p>\r\n<ul><li>However, the only thing you need to remember about syllables is that the number of vowels equals the number of syllables in the word.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul><p>The smallest syllable consists of a vowel (V). The biggest syllable in Cree contains a consonant (C), followed by a vowel, followed by a consonant. Other syllable types are CV and VC.<\/p>\r\n<p>Cree words can consist of any number of syllables &#8230; plus an extra consonant or two at the end of the word. Here are some examples.
