<\/a>Pronunciation of the Affricate CH<\/h1>\r\n

East Cree has four AFFRICATE sounds [ t\u0283 , ts, d\u0292, dz ]<\/span>. They are all spelled with the letters CH (with some minor exceptions described later.)<\/p>\r\n

CH [ t\u0283 ]<\/span> and J [ d\u0292 ]<\/span> pronunciations<\/h3>\r\n

At the beginning of a word and between vowels, CH can sound like the [ t\u0283 ]<\/span> in Chuck<\/em>; it also often sounds like the [ d\u0292 ]<\/span> in John<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n

Cree speakers can use the [ t\u0283 ]<\/span> and [ d\u0292 ]<\/span> sounds interchangeably, without signalling any change in the meaning of a word. For examples, see the page on voicing<\/a>. In contrast, these sounds are not interchangeable in English; think of ‘chain’ versus ‘Jane’, which have two different meanings.<\/p>\r\n
