Lax vowels also sound quite different when they are in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/cree\/en\/grammar\/sounds-east-cree\/sounds\/vowels\/diphthongs\/\" target=\"_blank\">combination<\/a> with W or U. (For example, they can be tense instead of lax.) The pronunciation of lax U, I and A is described below. (Most of the examples on this page are from speaker AD; the remainder are from speaker LS.)<\/p>\r\n<h3 class=\"head\">Lax U<\/h3>\r\n<p>U sounds like lax <span class=\"ipa\">[ \u028a ]<\/span> (the vowel in <em>push<\/em>). It can also sound O-like <span class=\"ipa\">[ \u028a \u031e]<\/span>, and longer <span class=\"ipa\">[ \u028a\u02d0 ]<\/span>. (To an English speaker, long <span class=\"ipa\">[ \u028a\u02d0 ]<\/span> would a bit sound more like the <span class=\"ipa\">[ u ]<\/span> in <em>boot<\/em> because of its longer duration.) <span class=\"ipa\">[ \u028a ]<\/span> is the most common pronunciation of U.
