Syllabification of East Cree<\/h1>\r\n

Speakers of a language use intuition when it comes to separating words into syllables but they follow general rules of their language. The rules stated below have been used throughout this site to syllabify the words used to demonstrate the Sounds of East Cree.<\/p>\r\n
1.<\/td>\r\nConsonant Clusters: Put a dash between consonants in a consonant cluster, but only if you can hear separate consonants; (i.e., don\u2019t separate C-H or S-H).<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>
<\/td>\r\nUnless:<\/td>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>
<\/td>\r\n<\/td>\r\na.<\/td>\r\nThe consonant cluster is at the end of the word.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>
<\/td>\r\n<\/td>\r\nb.<\/td>\r\nThe consonant cluster consists of: KW, TW, PW, MW.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>
<\/td>\r\n<\/td>\r\nc.<\/td>\r\nThe consonant follows CHISH,\u00a0 CHIS, CHIH, or CHICH.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>
<\/td>\r\n<\/td>\r\nd.<\/td>\r\nThe next vowel is inaudible in the spelling.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>
<\/td>\r\n<\/td>\r\ne.<\/td>\r\nThere is no audible vowel sound before the consonant cluster.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>
2.<\/td>\r\nSilent Vowels: If the vowel in the spelling is inaudible, put a dash after it.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>
<\/td>\r\nUnless:<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>
<\/td>\r\n<\/td>\r\na.<\/td>\r\nThe vowel is immediately followed by a consonant and a dash.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>
