This is to reflect the pronunciation of elders, as well as the fact that the verbs ending in  <span class=\"cree\">\u14ef\u1424<\/span> have <span class=\"cree\">\u14ef<\/span> in most endings.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>For example <span class=\"cree\">\u140b\u1426\u146f<strong>\u14ef<\/strong>\u1424<\/span> conjugates as <span class=\"cree\">\u14c2\u1456\u1426\u146f<strong>\u14ef<\/strong>\u14d0, \u148b\u1456\u146f<strong>\u14ef<\/strong>\u14d0, \u1473 \u140b\u1426\u146f<strong>\u14ef<\/strong>\u1466,<\/span>&#8230; etc. In the grammar, we say that this verb has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/cree\/en\/grammar\/northern-dialect\/verbs\/cree-verb-stems\/vai\/\">stem<\/a> ending in short i.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>On the other hand, <span class=\"cree\">\u14a6\u148b<strong>\u14f2<\/strong><\/span> conjugates as <span class=\"cree\">\u14c2\u14a6\u148b<strong>\u14f1<\/strong>\u14d0, \u148b\u14a6\u148b<strong>\u14f1<\/strong>\u14d0, \u1473 \u14a6\u148b<strong>\u14f1<\/strong>\u1466<\/span>. In the grammar, we say that this verb has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/cree\/en\/grammar\/northern-dialect\/verbs\/cree-verb-stems\/vai\/\">stem<\/a> ending in short u.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The spelling of <span class=\"cree\">\u140b\u1426\u146f\u14ef\u1424<\/span> used to be <span class=\"cree\">\u140b\u1426\u146f\u14f2<\/span> but has been changed to make it much easier to write all the other endings for each verb.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Note that in the Southern dialect, people do not write the difference in the spelling of the dictionary form, and need to look up the stem to find out whether the verb conjugates with short i or short u.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span class=\"cree\">\u14ef\u1424<\/span> or <span class=\"cree\">\u14f2<\/span> are not the only endings that work this way. In these verbs you can still hear the <span class=\"cree\"><strong>\u14f1<\/strong><\/span> sound at the end when different endings are used. For a word like <span class=\"cree\">\u14a6\u148b\u14f2<\/span> you cannot say <span class=\"cree\">\u14c2\u14a6\u148b\u14ef\u14d0<\/span> or <span class=\"cree\">\u1473 \u14a6\u148b\u14ef\u1466<\/span> so it will not take the <span class=\"cree\">\u14ef\u1424<\/span> ending. But you can still hear the <span class=\"cree\">\u1405<\/span> sound when you say <span class=\"cree\">\u14c2\u14a6\u148b<strong>\u14f1\u14d0<\/strong><\/span> or <span class=\"cree\">\u1473 \u14a6\u148b<strong>\u14f1\u1466<\/strong><\/span> so it takes a <span class=\"cree\">\u14f2<\/span> ending.
