The full syllabic chart<\/a> shows all the symbols that are used in writing Eastern James Bay Cree. Some symbols are used only in the Southern dialect, not in the Northern, as explained below.<\/p>\n

Eastmain speakers<\/h3>\n

In Eastmain, speakers use both Southern and Northern pronunciations since the community is on the boundary of the two dialect areas. Sometimes the two pronunciations are used in a single word, or show up in the written form.<\/p>\n

\u14ed, \u14ef, \u14f1, \u14f4, \u1505<\/span> and \u1510, \u1511, \u1513, \u1515, \u1525<\/span><\/h3>\n

Both these sets are used in writing East Cree words. Some Inland speakers may pronounce the \u1510, \u1511, \u1513, \u1515, \u1525<\/strong><\/span> as \u14ed, \u14ef, \u14f1, \u14f4, \u1505<\/strong><\/span> and therefore may want to check their spelling with the dictionary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

There is a tendency for southern coastal speakers to pronounce \u14a1<\/strong><\/span> as \u1466<\/strong><\/span> at the end of words. Special attention is needed when writing final \u14a1<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Inland and Coastal differences in pronunciation<\/h3>\n
