This is a visual cue to let you quickly see which dialect you&#8217;re working with.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Language<\/h3>\r\n<p><img style=\"float: left;\" src=\"http:\/\/dictionary.eastcree.org\/img\/number2.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>The next row is where you select what language you will be typing in to conduct your search. If you select:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">syllabics<\/span>, the dictionary will search all of the syllabic fields in the database (i.e., it will not search for any words written in roman or English\/French). **Note that if you select this option, you must also type in syllabics.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">roman<\/span>, the dictionary will search all of the roman fields in the database.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">English\/French<\/span>, the dictionary will search all of the English\/French transliterations in the database.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>You will notice that the language\/form of writing you select now has a green background, while the others will have a dark brown background. This is a visual cue to let you quickly see which language you&#8217;re searching in.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Options<\/h3>\r\n<p><img style=\"float: left;\" src=\"http:\/\/dictionary.eastcree.org\/img\/number3.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>This section allows you to refine your search parameters. You can either expand or narrow your search to generate the results you want.<br \/>\r\nThe first row, in conjunction with the language\/form of writing you selected, will tell the dictionary which fields it must search in.<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"illustration\" style=\"padding: 1em; margin-bottom: 1em;\"><img class=\"illustration\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/img\/cree_dictionary_entry.png\" alt=\"\" \/>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">keyword<\/span>: if you selected <span class=\"bold italic\">English<\/span> or <span class=\"bold italic\">French<\/span>, selecting <span class=\"bold\">keyword<\/span> will run a search on all the keywords and glosses in the database.<br \/>\r\nIf you selected <span class=\"bold italic\">Syllabics<\/span> or <span class=\"bold italic\">Roman<\/span>, the search by <span class=\"bold\">keyword<\/span> will be performed on the headword of dictionary entries.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><span class=\"bold\">definition<\/span>: the dictionary will search all English and French definitions for the word(s) you typed in the search field.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><span class=\"bold\">example<\/span>: the dictionary will search through the examples or example translations of the entries for the word(s) you typed in the search field.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><span class=\"bold\">topic<\/span>: the dictionary will search through the topics or themes for the word(s) you typed in the search field.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>The second row holds options for where to search within <span class=\"italic\">the word<\/span> itself. There are four options:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span class=\"bold\">beginning<\/span>: when this option is chosen, the search will return <span class=\"bold\">X<\/span>YZ, where X is the beginning of the word, Y is the middle, and Z is the ending of a word.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><span class=\"bold\">containing<\/span>: when this option is chosen, the search will return<br \/>\r\n<span class=\"bold\">X<\/span>YZ,<br \/>\r\nX<span class=\"bold\">Y<\/span>Z,<br \/>\r\nXY<span class=\"bold\">Z<\/span>,<br \/>\r\n<span class=\"bold\">XYZ<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span class=\"bold\">ending<\/span>: when this option is chosen, the search will return XY<span class=\"bold\">Z<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span class=\"bold\">whole word<\/span>: when this option is chosen the search will return <span class=\"bold\">XYZ<\/span>. The spelling must be exact to use this option, otherwise you will get no results.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2>Examples of Cree based Search <a name=\"search-cree\"><\/a><\/h2>\r\n<div style=\"padding: 1em; margin-bottom: 1em;\">\r\n<p>If you know the spelling of the Cree word you are looking for, you can perform your search by using either the syllabic or roman orthography of the word.<br \/>\r\nTo type using the syllabic orthography, you need a virtual syllabic keyboard like &#8220;Keyman&#8221; (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/cree\/en\/resources\/how-to\/cree-fonts\/\" target=\"help\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/cree\/en\/resources\/how-to\/cree-fonts\/<\/a>).<br \/>\r\nIf you don&#8217;t have a syllabic keyboard, you can use the built-in Flash-based keyboard to type in syllabics (you need Adobe Flash Player installed).<br \/>\r\nYou can active it by clicking on the keyboard icon <img src=\"http:\/\/dictionary.eastcree.org\/img\/keyboard-icon.png\" alt=\"\" \/> in the typing field.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Searching for <span class=\"italic underline\">nisk<\/span> in <span class=\"italic underline\">northern<\/span> dialect<\/h3>\r\n<div style=\"background: transparent url('https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/img\/cree_dictionary_roman_whole_nisk.png') no-repeat 0 -30px; min-height: 250px; min-width: 1600px; overflow: hidden; position: relative;\"><img class=\"illustration\" style=\"top: -30px; position: absolute;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/img\/cree_dictionary_roman_whole_nisk.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\r\n<h4>Will result in<\/h4>\r\n<div style=\"background: transparent url('https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/img\/cree_dictionary_roman_whole_nisk.png') no-repeat 0 -300px; min-height: 350px; min-width: 1600px; overflow: hidden; position: relative;\"><img class=\"illustration\" style=\"top: -300px; position: absolute;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/img\/cree_dictionary_roman_whole_nisk.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\r\n<h2>Example of the Relaxed search<a name=\"search-relaxed\"><\/a><\/h2>\r\n<p class=\"note\">Our dictionary has a built-in <span class=\"bold\">Cree<\/span> spellchecker which allows you to control the precision of the returned suggestions.<br \/>\r\nThe more precision you choose, the less results you get.<\/p>\r\n<p>For example, if you are looking for the word &#8220;<span class=\"bold\">nisk<\/span>&#8221; but you type &#8220;<span class=\"bold\">ni<span class=\"italic\">i<\/span>sk<\/span>&#8220;,<br \/>\r\nour spellchecker (the relaxed search engine) automatically gets activated. By default, it is set to be as precise as possible to return the fewest results to match your search query.<br \/>\r\nPS: This option is only available if you choose to search in <span class=\"bold\">Syllabic<\/span> or <span class=\"bold\">Roman<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><img class=\"illustration\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/img\/cree_dictionary_relaxed.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>If you reduce the precision, you will get more results. This is useful when your margin of possible spelling errors is large.<\/p>\r\n<p><img class=\"illustration\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/img\/cree_dictionary_relaxed2.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2>Examples of English based Search <a name=\"search-en\"><\/a><\/h2>\r\n<div style=\"padding: 1em; margin-bottom: 1em;\">\r\n<p>If you want to find the East Cree word for &#8220;goose&#8221; in our dictionary, you have few options. Below, you will see how the search works in combination with the various options to provide different results.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"note\">Note how <span class=\"bold\">Options 1a, 1b, and 1c<\/span> use <span class=\"bold\"> beginning \/ containing \/ whole word<\/span>, respectively, to produce different results.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Option 1a: Searching for <span class=\"italic underline\">English<\/span> <span class=\"italic underline\">keywords<\/span> <span class=\"italic underline\">beginning<\/span> with <span class=\"italic underline\">goose<\/span> in <span class=\"italic underline\">Northern<\/span> dialect<\/h3>\r\n<div class=\"illustration\" style=\"background: transparent url('https:\/\/www.eastcree.org\/img\/cree_dictionary_gloss_beg_goose.png') no-repeat 0 -150px;
